Description
Bull thistles grow on the farmlands as well as the edges of the woodlands of Wisconsin. It is distinguished by a covering of short, sharp, purple prickles on the upper surface of the lower dark green leaf blade. Many consider it a weed but the bull thistle is edible to birds and humans alike as well as having natural medicinal purposes. It is also a wonderful attraction for the bees that are needed in agriculture. This bull thistle was taken near the woodland in central Wisconsin, however these prickly heads remind me of the beauty of the southwest in which I grew up.
